Guardians of the
Galaxy Vol. 2 brings your favorite characters from the first film back for
another round of space-travelling fun. It takes place a couple of months after
the first film, where the team acts as sort of heroes-for-hire. Once again,
these actors all have great chemistry with one another. Writer-director James
Gunn’s underlying purpose with this movie really seems to be exploring the idea
of “family.” Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) finds his father, Ego (played by Kurt
Russell). Gamora (played by Zoe Saldana) gets a head-to-head confrontation with
her adoptive sister Nebula (played by a slightly overacting Karen Gillan). You
get the relationship between these two, and it works so well. Rocket (voiced by
Bradley Cooper) is in sort of a self-sabotage position because of his
upbringing. Yondu feels more fleshed out here, too. In the first one, he was a
little one-note. In this one, you’re given more as to why he kidnapped Quill
from Earth, and didn’t deliver him to Ego. Baby Groot puts the rest of the
Guardians in more parental figures than they have ever been used to. I will
admit that the plot does feel a little bit cluttered at times, but it’s never
really that bad. There are multiple
antagonists in this one kind of struggling for screen-time. One of them is
really interesting to watch, and actually does a good job working off our main
heroes. Guardians 2 may not be as
fresh as the first film, but I’ll be damned if it isn’t still a fun ride that
these characters take you on.
