Alien: Covenant

Alien: Covenant is directed by Ridley Scott, and written by John Logan & D.W. Harper. The film stars Micahel Fassbender, Katherine Waterson, Billy Crudup, and Danny McBride. The crew of the spaceship “Covenant” are on a colonial mission. They are searching to find a habitable planet that can support them. They come across a distress signal, and end up on a seemingly deserted planet. Before long, the crew finds bloodthirsty alien creatures, and the enigmatic android David. Ridlye Scott directs this movie fantastically. The atmosphere is chilling, and the production design is both eerie and gorgeous. The aliens themselves look just diffwerent enough from one another to feel distinct. The acting is pretty solid. If I’m being honest, though, this is Michael Fassdender’s movie. He owns every scene he’s in, even having to act opposite himself on multiple occasions. That doesn’t mean I want to detract from everyone else, though. They’re all good. Well, Danny McBride is actually pretty damn awesome in this. His character was probably one of the most interesting ones. Katherine Waterson as Daniels is fine. There’s nothing really new or innovative she can bring to the table here. This movie does (multiple times) fall into clichéd slasher movie territory. Characters split up. They fool around in showers. They say they’ll be right back. This is a little disappointing because I distinctly remember the first two Alien movies played around with these tropes. With some exceptions, a lot of these characters feel like they’re just there to die. You don’t remember their names before the movie ends. Think how memorable (and likable) characters like Hudson, Bishop, Newt, Hicks, and Vasquez were in Aliens. Overall, Alien: Covenant is good-enough movie. You can probably watch and enjoy it just fine, but I don’t think going out and seeing it right away is necessary.
