The basic story of The
Lego Batman Movie is that the Joker (voiced by Zack Galifianakis) wants
Batman to accept that he is Batman’s
(Will Arnett) greatest enemy, and goes to great lengths just to prove it. This
is something that is painted in a very clever way. The filmmakers treat the
beats between these two in a way similar to a romantic couple. This is actually
one of the most comic-accurate interpretations of the Batman and the Joker,
with the Joker wanting Batman to just admit his obsession. I expected to enjoy
this movie as a really solid comedy, but I honestly feel that it is so much
more than that. This movie actually delves into Batman’s mind, and truly
delivers what a lot of his relationships are like. I’ve talked about the
Batman-Joker relationship. He kind of seems to take Alfred (Ralph Fiennes) for
granted. He doesn’t really care about Robin (Michael Cera), even trying to make
sure he’s “110% expendable” before taking him on a mission. At first, this is
actually really funny. Later in the movie, they call back to this particular
scene, and show it in a very different light. The heart and humor actually
balance each other out really well. The jokes in the movie land. The depth
makes you care about the characters. Overall, The Lego Batman Movie is a truly funny satire of the Batman movies
that came before it with a ton of depth and heart, and is easily the best
Batman movie since The Dark Knight.
