I have probably dedicated far too much time to the Sharknado franchise. They are all horrible movies. And yet, I always seem to embrace them. Maybe it’s because I am somebody who loves a fun guilty pleasure movie (and that is the best way to enjoy this franchise overall). I have to say they chose the biggest and dumbest for last. This time around, Finn Shepard (played by Ian Ziering) and all of his dead friends, chosen from random points in time must travel through time to prevent sharknados from ever happening. It’s kind of pointless to explain that this film fails on almost every level imaginable. The acting is awful. The effects are awful. The directing is awful. The writing is awful. So, why am I not mad? Because the filmmakers know these are bad movies. The supporting cast is unbelievably random. Neil DeGrasse Tyson (yes, that Neil DeGrasse Tyson) plays Merlin. Darrell Hammond and Ben Stein play George Washington and Alexander Hamilton respectively. If I have one legitimate criticism towards the movie’s random cameos, it’s this: Gary Busey is in it with a cameo (and doesn’t really ever get a chance to show off his Gary Busey-ness Occasionally, the movie delves into melodrama (and I was still onboard for these moments because I love how painfully cheesy they are). The movie crams in a ton of references to other movies whether they make sense or not. Movies referenced include Die Hard, Back to the Future, and The Princess Bride among others. One of my favorite parts of this movie is a scene where they are in the revolutionary war. In the background, the song Come Out and Play by the Offspring is playing. One of the characters speaking actually says the line “come out and play” in unison with the lyrics. At this point, you already where you stand on the Sharknado movies. If you’re like me and you just embrace the awful and the stupid, you’ll enjoy watching this film. If you’ve never understood the franchise’s appeal, this definitely isn’t the movie for you. As far as rating this film goes, I’m just not going to bother. I have no idea where to begin. The movie is awful, and it knows and embraces it. For this reason, I feel that giving this movie a rating just doesn’t matter.
