Moana (voiced by
newcomer Auli’i Cravalho) is the daughter of her tribe’s chief. Her people are
very content with staying where they are. When her people are endangered
however, she ignores her father’s wishes and sets out on a journey to find the
demigod Maui (voiced by Dwayne Johnson) and save her people. Johnson as Maui
may just be the movie’s standout. He provides his usual charm and charisma with
this movie. The culture explored within the story of this movie is interesting,
and has never really been explored to this level. Moana’s animation is wonderful. The ocean is given this power and
beauty. The story of the movie did keep me invested, even if I did know where
the story was going to go. The music was very catchy. I really liked the songs
in the movie, even if I don’t necessarily think they’ll match up to the songs
in movies like Aladdin and The Lion King. My personal favorite was
the song called You’re Welcome. The
comedic elements of the film actually work far better than I expected them too.
In a lot of movies, these moments can feel out place. They feel genuinely
natural here, though. In the end, despite a predictable story, Moana works. It benefits from gorgeous
animation, fun music, an epic scale not often found in animated Disney movies,
and the two likable main characters. I recommend giving the one a watch,
especially if you are a fan of Disney movies.
