Morgan

Morgan (played by Anya Taylor-Joy) is a girl who has been genetically engineered and raised by scientists. She is angered and lashes out at one of the scientists (played by Jennifer Jason Leigh). Risk manager Lee Weathers (played by Kate Mara) is brought in to assess the situation and determine whether or not Morgan should be terminated. When I first saw the trailer, I was intrigued by this movie. Structurally, Morgan is a bit messy. The movie starts out slow, exposition-heavy, and awkward. At first, the acting felt flat and monotone, before Rose Leslie entered into the picture, and before Anya Taylor-Joy got a chance to start speaking. Leslie, Taylor-Joy, and Paul Giamatti are the actors in the movie. Even Kate Mara started out feeling a bit flat. Admittedly, she gets better as the movie goes on. They do seem to build up a potential romance between Kate Mara and Boyd Holbrook’s characters. However, the writing and directing leave the actors with no discernible chemistry. The movie’s twist ending was actually very predictable, however. I do see some potential in first-time director Luke Scott (Ridley Scott’s son). At times, he does some pretty slick things. When it comes to action sequences however, he leaves a lot to be desired. Some of the action scenes in the movie are poorly filmed and edited. Overall, Morgan was one of those movies I couldn’t help but be disappointed by. Morgan carried a lot of potential, but offered little enough payoff.
