Star Wars: The Last
Jedi picks up where The Force Awakens
left off. Rey (played by Daisy Ridley) trains with Luke Skywalker (played
by Mark Hamill). Finn (played by John Boyega) and Rose (played by series
newcomer Kelly Marie Tran) are trying to find a hacker and try saving the
Resistance. Kylo Ren (played by Adam Driver) and Snoke (played by Andy Serkis)
are trying to crush the rebellion and searching for Luke Skywalker. This movie
does things pretty differently, and it’s already dividing Star Wars fans. The truth is, a lot of these things don’t bother
me. A lot of the comedy really did hit for me. The revelations worked really
well for me, and tied into a lot of the Star
Wars mythos, without giving too much away. I love what they did with Luke
Skywalker in this movie. This is the best I think Mark Hamill has ever been,
not only as Luke Skywalker, but also in his entire career. Daisy Ridley and
Mark Hamill work off each other really well. The relationship these two share
in this movie is what any good student-mentor relationship should be. Both push
and learn from each other. Both equally feel like students and teachers. They
also build on the relationship between Rey and Kylo Ren in this movie, and Rian
Johnson handles it really well. This relationship is built in such a way that
you don’t want it go the way it goes. As much as I did like this movie, I had
some issues with the movie. The chemistry between John Boyega and Kelly Marie
Tran wasn’t bad per se. The moment their relationship built up to came out of
nowhere, and the chemistry didn’t really make that moment feel earned. There’s
also a subplot in this movie that’s earned a lot of controversy. The overall
subplot didn’t bother me too much. One part of it didn’t work for me at all.
They throw an animal cruelty message in there, and it doesn’t feel like it fits
in a Star Wars movie. Overall, Star Wars: The Last Jedi is a really
good movie, despite having its issues here and there.
